A friend commented that today’s pop music is lame. Of course we’re aging with our tastes diverging from the mainstream, but I reminisce not to a time not of my childhood, high school, or college years—actually one when I was already pretty old… The golden age of pop: 2003.

Are these not among the best works from the following artists?

“Hey Ya” OutKast

“In da Club” 50 Cent

“Ignition” R. Kelly

“Crazy in Love” Beyonce/Jay-Z

“Work It” Missy Elliot

“Eminem” Lose Yourself

“Seven Nation Army” White Stripes

“Such Great Heights” Postal Service

“Clocks” Coldplay

“Like a Stone” Audioslave

“Bring Me To Life” Evanescence

“Maps” Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Not to mention Gorillaz, Queens of the Stone Age, Chili Peppers, Avril, Radiohead, Luda, Black Eyed Peas, Foo Fighters, Modest Mouse, The Shins, and Norah Jones at the peak of their game. Sadly Aaliyah’s final songs echoed over the airwaves. Add some sweet Santana collaborations—even Justin Timberlake’s songs were solid. (And actually, ladies, not all his songs are.)

And (sigh…) MTV still stood for Music Television.

You got a better year in mind? Let’s hear it.
